Frequently ask questions

How does VoIP works?
VoIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol allows you to take a standard analog telephone signal and turn it into a digital signal that is transmitted over the Internet. By plugging any standard telephone into a special device called an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) you can use your Internet connection to make telephone calls. With VoIP, analog voice calls are converted into packets of data. The packets, then, travel like any other type of data, such as e-mail, over the public Internet and/or any private IP network. Using a VoIP service, you can call landline, cell phones or other VoIP end users.

What is an ATA?
An ATA is a simple device which lets you connect any standard telephone or fax machine so it can use VoIP through your Internet connection. The ATA converts the analog signal from your telephone into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet. Providers usually bundle this device with their service so that you can start making calls right away. An ATA is generally smaller than a hand allowing you to bring it with you when you travel.

What is an IP phone?
IP Phones are special telephones which look and work like normal phones but connect directly to your Internet connection without the use of ATA device (to convert analog signals to digital signals). An IP Phone plugs directly into your Internet router and comes in both wireless and corded models. Business VoIP users generally opt for IP Phones because they have special buttons which allow calls to be transferred, put on hold and have multiple lines.

What is a softphone?
A softphone is a software program for making telephone calls over the Internet using a general purpose computer or a smartphone, rather than using dedicated hardware. Often a softphone is designed to behave like a traditional telephone, sometimes appearing as an image of a phone, with a display panel and buttons with which the user can interact. A softphone is usually used with a headset connected to the sound card of the PC, or with a USB phone.

Can I keep my phone number?
Yes, we can port any phone number within Canada or allocate new one. Porting time usually takes 7 working days when all paperwork is completed. New phone numbers can be up and running within the same day.

Is it secured?
Yes, our servers and databases are located in a Class II data center firewall protected and we ensure that your devices are authenticated with our servers using randomly generated strong password. Incoming calls are only accepted from our proxy and you can set a credit limit in your account through the portal. Note also that all devices that we ship or the one that you own can be password protected to avoid abusing. This make it difficult if not impossible for an attacker to masquerade identities and abuse an account.

Can I bring my ATA or my VoIP phone when I travel?
Yes, the VoIP technology is considered as a nomad technology meaning that you can bring it with you everywhere. You only need an Internet connection to make it work so when you arrived at the hotel, you'll not miss any call. Note that 9-1-1 service is different than traditional service mainly due to the fact that the technology is considered as nomad. Please refer to the www.bedirect.ca/911 for more details.

What is Find me Follow me?
Find me Follow me is a features configurable through our portal that let you provide multiple phone numbers to dial (as listed, randomly or simultaneously) to reach you. At the end if the call is not answered, you can send it to your voicemail.

What is the Advanced Voicemail?
This feature allow us to send you a copy of your voicemail by email when they arrives so you'll never miss a voicemail when you're not at home. We use the common MP3 audio format to send our voicemail making it virtually readable on any platform.

Click on Sign Up Now button and attach your current telephony invoice (all pages) and a sales agent will contact you within 48 hours (business days only) to begin registration process.
